Model Horse Art Day!

We will be hosting an informal gathering of model horse artists on Saturday, April 29, 2017 (the day before the show) at the Riverpark Inn. (Same hotel as the show.)

Start time is 1pm.

We have reserved a conference room and plan to meet there for an afternoon of sharing ideas and techniques in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Bring a small project to show others your technique, or you can ask others for advice if you need help on something. Or just come and socialize without the stress of show day. It will be an open-house format; drop by when you like and leave when you want.

Updates will be posted here and on Regions 2 & 3 Facebook pages and yahoo groups etc. as we get closer to the show date.

Updates and News:

Most recent info update 4/26/17:

Saturday:
La Cocina could not accommodate us as a group on such short notice, and the Saturday night dinner plans have been cancelled (sorry!). We will see you at the open house on Sat. afternoon 1-5 pm, but everyone will be on their own for dinner afterwards.

Sunday:
Classlist Update:

Class # 220 OF Breyer/Other Decorator 1989 and Before Class # 220-S OF Breyer/Other Decorator 1990 and After Class # 221

OF Stone Decorator 2005 and Before Class # 221-S OF Stone Decorator 2006

The tables in the showhall will not have tablecloths on them, so bring your own table cover. Doors open at 7:30 am.

Western Performance will have a class for Other Stock Work – Class # 249-S.

Fantasy/Decorator division* splits: Class # 220 OF Breyer/Other Decorator 1989 and Before Class # 220-S OF Breyer/Other Decorator 1990 and After Class # 221 OF Stone Decorator 2005 and Before Class # 221-S OF Stone Decorator 2006

*If desired, you may show your unrealistic color horses in their Breed class in category “B” (Collectibility/Workmanship) instead of showing them in the Fantasy/Deco division. If you choose to show them in a Breed class, you may NOT also show them in the Fantasy/Deco division. There is a 3 model limit total in each class**.

1. “Art Day” open house in the Sabino conference room at the Riverpark Inn on Saturday April 29 from 1 til 5 pm – all show entrants & their helpers are welcome but if you haven’t let me know that you are coming, I need you to message me by Tuesday night (April 25). There will be a get-together for dinner after the open house (dutch treat) — I have to make reservations so again (unless you have already replied and I have you on the list) let me know asap if you plan to come.

2. Due to space and time constraints we will not be able to accommodate spectators at the show. When you arrive, check in with Marilyn (She will be by the double doors on the east side of the room) to pick up your name tag. Name tags will be required for entry to the showhall. If you are bringing a helper (or spouse, or other family member), to the show with you and you have not let her know yet, you must tell her by Tuesday night (April 25) — you have to have a name tag made for your helper if you have one, and she must give the hotel caterer the final lunch count – by Tuesday night. Lunch is Italian pasta, green salad, garlic bread, and ice tea. The lunch is free but is not gluten-free, fat-free, meat-free, sugar-free, any-other-popular-bad-stuff-for-you-free. If you have dietary restrictions you may bring your own lunch (let Marilyn know if you choose this option so we don’t mistakenly pay for a catered lunch for you).

3. Multiple rings will be running at once so it’s going to be hectic — please listen carefully for class calls. In order to stay on schedule (the show will NOT be running til midnight — that’s way past my bedtime!) you must remove your models as soon as the class has been judged so the next class can load in a timely manner.

4. As usual, do NOT touch any other entrant’s models without explicit permission from the owner. Exception: if you lay your model down on the table, you are giving the judge permission to pick it up to look at the other side unless you place a note by your horse that the judge may not pick it up (your horse might be marked down if the judge can’t see both sides). Another exception is: if you leave your model on the table after its class has been pinned, the judge or staff may move it to the Pony Pound where it will be incarcerated for overstaying its welcome on the judging table 🙂 .

If you have any questions or comments, now’s the time, please contact Marilyn at the email address above!

Tucson Model Horse Show is now a Western Conference qualifier and a Golden West Championship qualifier.

Our show has been selected to receive the 2017 Breyer Benefit Event Model “Reno”! This limited edition glossy model is donated by Breyer and will be raffled at the show per Breyer requirements: Each paid open entrant to the NAN-qualifying show will receive one raffle ticket. Winner must be present on the day of the show. No raffle tickets will be sold. The show holder and her family members are not eligible to win. Proxy showers and Youth Class entrants are not eligible to win.

We have added a class for Artists’ Medallions — any size or medium is acceptable, as long as it depicts an equine. Class may be split if there are enough entries. Medallions placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd will receive qualifying tickets for the Western Conference championship show.

Show rules and important information for Entrants & Judges:

1). Show Date: Sunday, April 30, 2017 – Entries must be postmarked by April 15, 2017

2). Showhall opens at 7:30 AM for setup. Show will begin promptly at 8:30 AM and end around 6:30 PM.

3). Show is open to models of all sizes.

4). Each model can be entered in only one breed class, but you may show 3 different models per class*

*DOLLAR BUY-IN: you may add one or more horses to a class with $1 buy-in for each horse. Place the dollar with the horse when you put him in the class and the judge or host will pick up the dollar before the class starts).

5). There will be a 5 minute time limit between classes for setup between divisions. Time limits will be enforced. Classes will not be held for models.

6). Judging Criteria:

All Breed/Halter classes are judged on conformation, breed type, and condition. Documentation is not required, but for rare breeds or unusual colors you may place a small reference sheet (no larger than 8.5” x 11” in size) next to your horse.

OF Collectibility is judged on desirability, rarity, age, and condition. Documentation (no larger than 8.5” x 11” in size) is required in collectibility classes – models without documentation will not be judged. Only OF (Original Finish) models may be shown in Collectibility classes. No Custom, Artist Resin, or Custom Glaze China models may be shown in Collectibility.

Workmanship is judged on quality of prepping, painting, and finishwork. Only Custom, Artist Resin, and Custom Glaze China models may be shown in Workmanship classes. No Original Finish models may be shown in Workmanship.

Performance is judged on the horse’s suitability to perform in the class entered, also correct in-scale tack for the class. Documentation/reference material (no larger than 8.5” x 11”) is strongly encouraged in performance classes. Dolls may be used but are not required. In Harness classes vehicles may be used but are not required. OF, CM, AR, and China models will be combined in Performance.

7). We will be using the 3 x 5 card method of identifying models for showing. The front of the card should have the class number, model’s name, breed, and gender. The shower’s name should be clearly printed or written on the back of each card. Judges will be picking up the 3 x 5 cards of the 1st through 6th place horses. Models will need a new card for each class they are entered in.

Except for Fantasy and Performance, all classes will be double judged.
Breed/Halter classes will be judged at the same time as Collectibility/Workmanship classes. If you are showing your OF model in both Halter and Collectibility you will need two 3 x 5 cards – one marked “A” for Halter and one marked “B” for Collectibility.

If you are showing your model in AR, CM or Custom Glaze you will need to place two 3 x 5 cards on the table with the model – one marked “A” for Halter and one marked “B” for Workmanship.

You are not required to show in both A and B – you may show in “A” only or “B” only if you wish.

8). Championships will be determined by the first and second place models in each division. Champions can only be chosen from the first place models. The Reserve Champion will then be chosen from the remaining first place models along with the model that placed second to the Champion in their Halter class. All other second place models do not qualify for the Reserve Championship.

9). Awards: Paper ribbon flats to 6th place; rosettes or certificates and/or other awards for Champion and Reserve Champion models.

10). NAMHSA: This show is  a NAMHSA Member Show. 1st or 2nd place equids will receive a NAN card in all qualifying NAMHSA classes and will be eligible to compete at the North American Nationals in 2016 thru 2019. Please visit the NAMHSA website for more information on NAMHSA and NAN. (Unfortunately, it seems that the 2017 NAN has been cancelled by the Board of Directors – please consult the NAMHSA website for current information on card qualification dates).

11). Judges: Per NAMHSA rules: A person may not show and judge in the same division at a NAN-Qualifying Show. A division is defined as one or more grouped classes such as “OF Breyer/Other Plastic”, “Custom Glazed”, or “Artist Resin”. A judge may not judge any model that he/she has worked/collaborated on. A judge may not judge any model which he/she owns or has owned within the last six months. A judge may not judge models owned by relatives of the judge. (A “relative” is any person related to showholder as grandparent, parent, step-parent, aunts or uncles (by blood or marriage), spouse, significant other, son, daughter, step-son, step-daughter, sibling, in-law, niece, nephew, first cousin, or any person residing with judge or other relatives of judge.) A judge may not judge any models owned by any individual who co-owns one or more models with that judge. The show holder of any show and her family may not show at all.

12). Youth Classes are for children age 14 years and under. Youth classes are not eligible to earn NAN cards. Tack used in the youth Performance classes must be made by the child entrant, or Breyer / Other OF Plastic tack may be used. Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
